Public Input Process for Parks and Recreation Planning
This text presents the methodology of four models of designing, collecting and interpreting input from residents and users of the community parks and recreation system. The four models discussed are citizen survey, public hearing, small group and charette.
The decision of which public input method is most appropriate is best decided by the local community agency after they determine the goals for the public input process and their available resources.
An Introduction to Playground Maintenance
Today’s children spend a great deal of time playing indoors. Kids watch television, play video games, text and video chat from their rooms. For some children the only time spent in the outdoors is playing organized sports. There are many outdoor opportunities for children which are vital to growth, learning and development. For children to grow into creative and productive citizens, unstructured physical activity must occur; for which, playgrounds are an ideal setting. Designing and maintaining playgrounds for children to safely explore, play and develop is the top priority for playground providers. There is a risk of injury with any physical activity.
The National Program for Playground Safety (NPPS) states that 80% of school injuries happen on playgrounds. A proactive approach to provision of safe playgrounds requires a multi-pronged approach that includes a good maintenance program.
